Mauka Hualalai Rentals is my ohana. We live here on the Big Island, and most of the cars we rent end up out on the Kohala Coast, because that is where the resorts are. Waikoloa Beach Resort, the Hilton, the Marriott, the condos at Kolea and Halii Kai. If you are flying in and staying out this way, the airport rental circus is something you can skip entirely. Car rental in Waikoloa works differently with us: the rental car comes to you.
Here is how it goes. You pick the actual car, not "compact or similar", the real thing with a name. Send me your flight number, or your check-in date if you are already on island, and it is waiting when you arrive, washed and full of gas. When it is time to head home, we come and collect it. Anaeho'omalu Bay, A-Bay to everyone who lives here, is a four minute drive from most of the resorts, so do yourself a favor and catch one sunset there before you leave.
Land at Kona, skip the shuttle, and drive straight up the coast. Better yet, let me bring the car to you. It is parked and waiting when you check in at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, the Marriott, or your condo down Waikoloa Beach Drive. Keys in hand, no counter.
We run cars to all of the Waikoloa Beach Resort properties, and up the Kohala Coast to Mauna Lani and the Fairmont Orchid too. Staying up the hill in Waikoloa Village instead? Same deal. Tell me where you are sleeping and that is where your rental car shows up.
These are our cars. A small team of ohana keeps them running, father and son Clayton and Eli, plus Boomer, Victor, and Pamela. Real people with real names, not a faceless call center. The chains back at the airport cannot say that.
The national companies make you queue at Keahole before you ever reach the beach. We flip that around. The car comes to you in Waikoloa, about twenty minutes up Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway, so your trip starts on the sand instead of in a line.
Which ones? All of them. The Hilton Waikoloa Village is the giant of the bunch, the one with the canal boats and the tram, sitting on the Waikoloa Beach Resort grounds by the Kings' Shops. A couple of minutes down the road is the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, closer to A-Bay itself. After that the condos: Kolea, Halii Kai, the Bay Club, Vista Waikoloa, the Shores. Same door-to-door service for every one of them.
Keep going up the coast and the Kohala resorts are an easy run for us too, so Mauna Lani, the Fairmont Orchid, the Westin Hapuna, and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel are all covered. Booked up in Waikoloa Village instead of on the water? No trouble at all. It is about ten minutes down to the coast from up there.
Waikoloa is close. Twenty minutes north of Kona International Airport, straight up Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway, and you are there. That short distance is the whole reason resort delivery works out here. The national outfits keep their cars back at Keahole, which means a shuttle ride, a counter, and a wait before you ever point north. Skip all of it. With us the car is already sitting at your resort in Waikoloa when you arrive.

About twenty minutes. Waikoloa Beach Resort sits roughly nineteen miles north of Kona International Airport (KOA), straight up Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. Waikoloa Village, the residential area up the hill, is a few minutes further inland. Either way it is a quick, easy drive on a well paved highway.
