Here is the honest version of a port day. The Kona side is the move. Kailua-Kona town, the Captain Cook coffee belt, the Kohala Coast beaches like Hapuna. Volcanoes National Park and Hilo sit on the far side of the island, two and a half to three hours each way, so they are a stretch to do well and still make all aboard. Stay this side, see more, relax.
Kona is a tender port. Your ship anchors offshore and tenders you in to Kailua Pier, right in the middle of Kailua-Kona. We meet you near the pier with your car. No taxi out to the airport, no shuttle.
A ship excursion puts you on a bus with forty strangers and a fixed turnaround. Your own car puts you in charge. Coffee farm first thing, a quiet beach after lunch, back to the pier whenever you are ready.

Not sure where to point it? Walk-friendly Kailua-Kona and Ali'i Drive are right there for shave ice and the seawall. Hapuna Beach on the Kohala Coast is about thirty minutes north. Captain Cook and Kealakekua Bay snorkeling sit south, with a Greenwell Farms coffee tour on the way. All easy round trips on a port day.

Honestly, we do not recommend it. The park sits two and a half to three hours from Kona each way, so you would spend the whole day in the car and risk missing the last tender.
