Mauka Hualalai Rentals is my family, and we keep a row of SUVs for exactly this, from a wallet-friendly Hyundai Santa Fe to a Lexus LX570. Every one of them comes to you.
You pick the exact SUV, not "midsize or similar." Tell me where you are staying and it is sitting there when you land, washed and full of gas. That is the whole process. SUV rental in Kona should be this easy.
All-wheel drive is what this island asks for, and most of our SUVs have it. One afternoon you are in Hilo-side rain, the next on loose gravel near Waimea or a steep wet resort driveway. The Subaru Ascent, Porsche Macan, and BMW X2 grip through all of it.

Start with the Hyundai Santa Fe at $69 a day. Five seats, all-wheel drive, light on gas, and happy to cover the whole island. It is the value pick when you do not need a third row.
Step up to the Subaru Ascent or the Hyundai Palisade at $99 a day when you do. Three rows, seven or eight seats, and the trunk to match. These are the family haulers. The Porsche Macan and BMW X2 sit at the same price for travelers who want the SUV space with a little more fun behind the wheel.
At the top is the Lexus LX570 at $160 a day. Full-time four-wheel drive, adjustable air suspension, eight seats, and the one SUV in the fleet approved for the Mauna Kea summit road. If your trip includes the summit, this is the one.
A lot of visitors arrive convinced they need a Jeep. Here is the honest answer: the Big Island is not an off-road destination for rental cars. The famous stops, the beaches, Volcanoes National Park, Waimea, the Kohala coast, all sit on paved roads, and nearly every rental agreement on the island (Jeep companies included) prohibits driving off pavement anyway.
There is exactly one road where the vehicle truly matters: the Mauna Kea summit road above the Visitor Information Station, which requires a true 4x4 with low range. A soft-top Jeep at $150 or more a day is not the only ticket up. Our Mauna Kea approved 4x4s do the same drive, and for every other mile of your trip an AWD SUV from $69 a day is quieter, safer in the Saddle Road rain, and holds a week of luggage with the top on.
