Peer-to-peer car sharing platform. You rent a car from a stranger, not a company. No commercial insurance provided for any vehicles rented through this service. No roadside support or guaranteed condition of vehicle will be provided upon delivery or return. Hosts may cancel last minute or fluctuate prices wildly while your personal auto insurance does not cover losses incurred during time the vehicle is rented out through Turo. A BMW 4 Series on Turo Kona lists at $196/day.

We have been in business for over 6 years and love hearing stories from our happy renters. We would love to have the pleasure of adding you to the list!
Not a franchise. Not a broker. We're a local family who lives on the island and answers the phone.
Porsches. BMWs. Sprinter vans. Not "compact or standard". Cars you'll actually want to drive.
Your vehicle is waiting for you when you arrive at KOA. No counter. No shuttle. No line.
Your money stays on the Big Island (not some CEO's bonus check). We hire local. Buy local. Live here.
When you rent from us...you are renting from the people in this picture. Not from a corporation with a 1-800 number.
Our crew, inside one of our Sprinters, doing what we do.
Hint: not to a shareholder meeting in New Jersey.
Not "compact or similar"
Most often, yes. Our BMW 430i convertible rents for $99/day. Sixt charges $240/day for the same BMW 4 Series at KOA. Enterprise, Hertz, and Budget do not offer BMWs or Porsches. Their equivalent "premium" category is usually a Chrysler 300 or similar for $120 to $180/day. We also include 200 miles per day with no facility fees, concession fees, or airport surcharges. See our full fleet and pricing, or our cheap car rental in Kona breakdown.
Turo is a peer-to-peer platform where you rent from individual vehicle owners. The largest risk is last-minute cancellations by the host owner. Many visitors to the Big Island have had Turo hosts cancel days before arrival, leaving them scrambling. Your personal auto insurance does not cover Turo rentals, and their protection plans are expensive. We are a licensed and insured traditional car rental company with a confirmed fleet of vehicles that will be waiting for you at KOA when you arrive.
Sixt opened at KOA in 2024 as a German corporation. They offer BMWs, but their BMW 4 Series Convertible starts at $240/day. Our BMW 430i convertible starts at $99/day for the same car. Sixt also requires a shuttle from the airport and pickup of your vehicle at a counter. We deliver your vehicle directly to KOA arrivals or your hotel.
Yes. All these companies operate off-airport locations and require a shuttle bus ride after you land. Enterprise, National, and Alamo have counters closer to the terminal but still involve long lines and waiting times. With Mauka Hualalai, your vehicle will be delivered directly to KOA arrivals or your hotel. No shuttle required, no counter, no long lines.
Mauka Hualalai Rentals has the highest rating among all of the rental car companies at Kona airport with a 4.9 star rating on Google. We are locally owned and deliver directly to KOA airport or to your hotel. Many of our vehicles that you won't be able to rent through Enterprise, Budget, Hertz, or any other major chain include luxury autos such as Porsches, BMWs, Sprinter vans, and many others. No counter, no shuttle, no corporate runaround.
National chains located at KOA airport are infamous for their concession recovery fees, facility charges, airport surcharges, and mandatory insurance upsell charges. Some reviewers of Budget rentals have reported being hit with cleaning fees weeks after they returned the vehicle. Dollar rental agency charges an additional $13.50 per day for each driver beyond the first one. We are completely transparent in our pricing, so what you see is what you'll pay.
