Where to Take a Luxury Rental on the Big Island
The Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway along the Kohala Coast is one of the most scenic drives in Hawaii: wide open road, ocean views, and almost no traffic. North to Waikoloa and Waimea, south to the resorts and lava fields, or across the Saddle Road to Hilo. The Big Island rewards a car that makes the drive as good as the destination. We deliver your luxury rental to your Kona airport (KOA) car rental or your resort.
Our Exotic & Luxury Fleet
Why Rent a Convertible in Hawaii
The Big Island has the best driving conditions in Hawaii. The Kohala Coast highway (Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway) runs north from Kona along the ocean with wide lanes, gentle curves, and almost no traffic. On the west side it rarely rains. The trade winds blow in off the Pacific at a steady 78 degrees. A convertible does not make sense everywhere. In Kona, it makes total sense.
Drop the top leaving the airport and you have ocean on your left, black lava fields stretching to the mountains on your right, and nothing between you and all of it. The drive from KOA up to the Waikoloa resorts takes about 20 minutes on that road. The drive up to Waimea takes another 20, winding up into green ranching country where it gets noticeably cooler and the views open up over the whole coast below.
We have twelve convertibles in the Kona fleet: Mini Coopers, a Fiat 124 Spider, a Mazda Miata, and BMW roadsters. Each one feels completely different to drive. The Mini is fun and chuckable through the switchbacks above Kona. The Fiat and Miata are low, fast, and made for the coast road. The BMWs are smooth on the highway and feel like a proper sports car from the moment you sit in them.
And then there is the Porsche Boxster. Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, fabric top that folds in seconds. The flat-six behind you opens up on the Kohala Coast in a way that is hard to describe until you have felt it. It is not just transportation. It is the reason some people plan their whole trip around a rental car. If you have been thinking about driving a Porsche, Hawaii is the place to do it and the Boxster is the one to be in.
If you have never driven a convertible on a Hawaiian highway with the top down, it is one of those things that is hard to explain until you have done it. The Big Island is the place to try it.
