Our flagship 4x4, the Lexus LX570, seats 8 and is Lexus's take on the legendary Land Cruiser. Adjustable air suspension, rear seatback screens, heated and cooled seats, and full-time 4WD make it the ideal vehicle for reaching Mauna Kea's summit or exploring off-road.

The Mauna Kea Access Road climbs from Saddle Road to the Visitor Information Station at 9,200 ft., then continues unpaved all the way to the summit observatories at 13,796 ft. The paved lower section is open to all vehicles. The upper section, a steep 4.5 mi. long gravel and lava track, requires a 4x4 or AWD vehicle.
This is true. The upper portion of the road has a very steep grade and the loose gravel surface makes most conventional 2WD vehicles unstable on the downhill side, particularly if there is fog or rain. It is clearly stated at the visitor center that only 4x4 or AWD equipped vehicles may travel beyond this point.
Our 4x4 and AWD equipped SUVs and trucks have no problem navigating the summit road. Of course the Lexus LX570 with its adjustable air suspension and full-time 4WD system is the easiest vehicle to operate on this road. Can't find a Jeep rental on the Big Island? Our 4x4 SUVs are equally capable on this summit road and can accommodate up to eight passengers so everyone can ride together. If getting to the summit or visiting the visitor center for free stargazing is on your agenda, then reserve one of our 4x4 or AWD equipped vehicles and you'll be all set.
Before you head out: dress warmly (the temperature at the summit often drops below freezing), spend at least thirty minutes at the visitor center prior to heading higher to allow yourself to get acclimated, and check on weather and road conditions prior to leaving.
It is approximately fifty-five miles from Kona to the visitor center and takes about one hour and fifteen minutes. From Hilo it is approximately thirty-four miles and takes about forty-five minutes. We deliver to both Kona (KOA) and Hilo (ITO) airports as well as your hotel so you can leave when conditions are good.
